How to Read a Vendor Security Questionnaire
How to Read a Vendor Security Questionnaire
Tells you, inside a hundred-page questionnaire, which answers rest on evidence and which just repeat "implemented".
First work out what kind of document you are reading: a control-framework questionnaire (the NIST Cybersecurity Framework supplies this language through IDENTIFY, PROTECT, DETECT, RESPOND, RECOVER), a vendor's self-assessment, or third-party audit and certification material. They prove different things.
Read scope before conclusions: which legal entity, which product, which regions, which period, and until when. An answer outside that scope cannot be reused.
Push every answer down to an artefact: document name and version, report number, control ID, retest date, owning role. A bare "yes" with no source goes in your file as unknown, not as passed.
The gaps are your follow-up list. Typical model-side blind spots: training-data origin and licence, retention of prompts and logs, subprocessor lists, and contractual limits on training with outputs - Anthropic's Commercial Terms, for example, prohibit accessing the service to train competing AI models.
Cross-check against a risk catalogue: each entry in the OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications (official source repository, 2026 edition) can be turned into "which control covers this, and in which evidence document".
Catalogues get revised and numbering shifts between editions, so record the version number in the table.
Questionnaires are the document most often waved through at signature time and most often reopened line by line after an incident. Reading one well is not about scoring the vendor; it is about knowing which cells they proved, which they asserted, and which nobody answered.
