Sim-to-Real Transfer
Sim-to-Real Transfer
Move a policy trained in simulation onto a real robot and still have it work — crossing the gap between simulation and reality.
Sim-to-real transfer means deploying a control policy trained in physics simulation onto a real robot; the core obstacle is the reality gap: friction, delay and sensor noise in simulation do not match the real world.
Domain randomisation is one mainstream approach: during training, physics parameters, textures and lighting are deliberately randomised so the policy has seen variation and does not only recognise one simulated world.
Tobin et al. used domain randomisation to transfer a visual policy from simulation to a real arm; Peng et al. randomised dynamics parameters so quadruped and biped gaits could move from simulation to hardware.
Robot demos often look agile but shake on real hardware, usually because of this step. Knowing the reality gap exists stops you treating simulation success rates as real capability, and prompts you to ask which randomisation or system identification was used.
